HM Revenue & Customs - Email Scam

Users Beware….

Don’t be fooled, the government isn’t giving everyone a tax rebate!

Following on from an outbreak of the tax scam in January when fraudsters were preying on people under pressure to get their tax returns in before the January 31st deadline the fraudsters have struck again; this time they are using even more sophisticated techniques to get their messages through to the unwary.

The latest email scam is probably the best (and most dangerous) that we have seen it is managing to get through all but the best anti-spam, anti-phishing protection and when it gets through it is very deceptive and extremely convincing.

The look and feel of the email is very much that of a communication from the real HM Revenue & Customs, but to the trained eye it is clearly not, and is simply a phishing scam probably linked to some form of organised cyber crime team who will often sell on the information they receive.

Even the amount of money the email claims the Revenue wants to give you as a refund sounds realistic, and whilst it varies with each example, it is normally no more than a few hundred pounds, and the timing is perfect as many people are expecting legitimate tax statements and rebates at this time of year.

The bogus email invites receipients to click on to a website which aims to collect personal and credit card information, The user is redirected to a real looking HM Revenue & Customs site, that is actually fake. The scam was discovered by leading internet security firm WebSense which has traced the fake site to Denmark. It uses the same look, feel and graphics as the real site, making it hard to tell the two apart.

A HM Revenue and Customs spokesman said “The email is a sophisticated attempt at internet fraud. We are liaising with those agencies working to close down and prosecute those behind these scams. If you are in any doubt about a communication claiming to be from HMRC please contact us.”

Anyone who does get a scam email should delete it or at the very least check it out with the organisation that purportedly sent it.
